Tribological coatings for reducing friction

Tribology is the science that deals with the processes that take place during contact between materials and studies the reduction of friction between surfaces moving against each other.

The WC/C and DLC CarbonLafer coatings have many application, varying from components for automated machines, to racing, to the guides that make up the molds because they allow for the reduction of the friction coefficient of two surfaces moving against each other and an increase of wear resistance.

DLC coatings

As well as being widely used to reduce friction, DLC coatings have also produced excellent results in the plastic molding because its amorphous surface structure grants the coated elements good resistance against gas corrosion and facilitates the detachment effect on multi-item molds.
Furthermore, DLC, being the result of low temperature process, can also be applied to aluminium alloy, tungsten alloy and hardened steels with low tempering temperatures etc.
The high strength and low friction coefficient of this type of coating makes it particularly suitable for applications where lubricant is not used or where it is desired to reduce the quantity used.
Regarding roughness, DLC coating is indelible and it is particularly suitable for lapping or mirror polished surfaces.

WC/C CarbonLafer coatings

Before using DLC coating, it is very important to carry out a precise preliminary analysis of the geometry of the item being covered: for this reason, Lafer puts an engineer from its own R&D department at the client’s disposal, who is then able to offer comprehensive assistance.

WC/C CarbonLafer coatings

WC/C coatings, composed of tungsten carbide and amorphous carbon, are characterised by good hardness, excellent resistance to wear and a reduced friction coefficient. For these reasons, WC/C coatings are ideal for preventing cold welding, seizures, or other adhesive phenomena.
The areas for application are numerous: they can coat moving parts such as power transmissions, screws for compressors, motor gears, worms, rings for ball bearings or sliding guides.
In general, WC/C coatings are perfect for all moving parts in work where reduced lubrication is required.
It is important to know also, they can also be used in the food sector (they have been accepted by the Food and Drugs Administration)for example in dispensers, on blades for cutting tea and on coffee grinders.
