In cold forming works, be they sheet metal forming, blanking or drawing, the elements involved (such as punches, dies, blank holders, etc.) are subjected to wear, which adversely impacts productivity and the quality of formed parts.
Adhesive wear and abrasive wear are the main failure mechanisms suffered during these processes, due to the stress that elements must withstand.
In order to counter these types of wear, steel must have maximum hardness, a low friction coefficient and great ductility – which can be achieved by applying specific coatings and special treatments.
Abrasive wear is caused by the relative motion of two elements whose surfaces do not have the same hardness against one another. Abrasive wear results in galling phenomena – the greater the difference in hardness between the surfaces, the more visible the effects.
These are irreversible and worsen gradually, thereby producing more waste and requiring repeated maintenance downtime.
In this particular case, the coating improves the mould’s surface hardness – the harder the surface, the greater its abrasion resistance.
The issues relating to adhesive wear or sticking are caused by the relative motion of two parts and arise when particles are transferred from one surface to the other.
Due to their surface coarseness, contact points between sheet metal and mould can be subjected to such high pressures that they exceed the yield point of materials, thus generating plastic deformation.
